2009 Action Challenge

YOU CAN BE A CHAMPION, TOO. The commitments and resolutions adopted by our 2009 Champions were just pieces of paper --- until someone signed them. Then they became living, breathing documents that contributed significantly to achieving a tobacco-free Capital District community.

IMAGINE. . .if every person reading these words committed to getting one tobacco-related commitment or resolution signed by someone they know—or even signed one themselves!

BELIEVE. . .that the energy, momentum and leadership here in the Capital District community has the power to make that happen.

ACHIEVE. . .100 signed commitments/resolutions by June 30, 2009.

You can be a Champion, too.

Town of Niskayuna
Joe Landry, Town Supervisor

"The Niskayuna Town Board approved a local law that prohibits tobacco use in all of the Town’s parks.  This law encourages a healthy lifestyle for our residents, especially our children.  Our parks are designed for healthy activities such as walking, running, bicycling, or participating in sporting events, and they should be tobacco-free.  As legislators, we need to set the right example for our children today so that we can prevent a new generation of smokers tomorrow."
Town of Rotterdam
Steven A. Tommasone, Town Supervisor

" Smoke-free parks are a growing national trend and we want to keep the momentum going strong!  Annually, hundreds of thousands of our young people become regular smokers.  In Rotterdam, we want to help role model non-smoking behavior to them.  We want to provide children and their families a safe, smoke-free environment in our town parks."

Town of Glenville
Anthony Germano

" The Glenville Town Board applauds the efforts of the Capital District Tobacco-Free Coalition and remains committed to the continued encouragement to Town of Glenville retailers to reduce tobacco advertising in their place of business as well as tobacco advertising from areas likely to be seen by children.  We also thank those Glenville retailers who responded so quickly to this request."

Duanesburg Central School
Christine Crowley

" We are grateful for the support from the Tobacco-Free Healthy School Program - It allowed us to initiate a renovated district policy, provide students with information at a school assembly with Rick Stoddard, and develop an activity for the Great American Smoke-Out (with prizes!) - all with the mind set that student health is the primary goal for discouraging tobacco use. With the information and suggestions from the Tobacco-Free Healthy School Program, we believe that we are creating a greater awareness of the dangers and long-lasting negative effects of tobacco use."
Niskayuna High School
Larry Gillooley

"The tobacco policy in Niskayuna has resulted in a decreased number of suspensions, therefore increasing our classroom attendance.  Additionally, the increased awareness of tobacco related illnesses had contributed to the downward trend in tobacco use in our school district community.  As a health education department, it is our mission to give our students and staff the knowledge, skills and resources to make safe and healthy choices regarding tobacco use."

Capital District Association of Rental Property Owners (CDARPO)
Robert McRae, President

" The Capital District Association of Rental Property owners took the steps we did toward supporting a tobacco-free community because we recognized the dangers posed to everyone’s health, and we wanted to promote a cleaner, healthier environment in and around our properties.  We realized that smoking in a multi-unit residential building not only causes higher maintenance costs and an increased risk of fire, but exposes all the residents to the traveling pollutants that permeate the building."
J.W. Pfeil & Company, Inc/Troy
Deane S. Pfeil

" We want the environment at The Conservatory to be as healthy, clean and safe as possible. When we asked our tenants if they would support us making The Conservatory smoke-free, they unanimously and enthusiastically affirmed our position. Being smoke-free has become one of the apartments’ amenities and has enhanced our leasing success."
Troy Raven, LLC
Beth Anne & Bill Hughes

" We are very proud to say that we own smoke-free buildings. The apartments are easier to clean once they are vacated, there are no more cigarette burns on the property, the air is cleaner and it is much more appealing to a non-smoker. In the short and long run we are saving money and feel that our apartments are easier to rent without the smell of smoke."
Tri-City Rentals
Julie Knox

"Tri-City Rentals has taken the initiative to convert at least one building at each of our 23 Albany area apartment communities to smoke free housing. We have seen an increased demand for smoke free housing options and also reflecting our philosophy of healthy living want to give our consumers a healthy alternative. At this time converting buildings is still a work in progress but we feel that smoke free housing is the way of the future!"

Lock 7-12 Canalfest
Gail Kehn, Vice President of Visitor Services

" The Lock 7-12 Canalfest took the steps we did toward supporting a tobacco-free community because it made sense. The event celebrates the art, recreation and cultural assets to families throughout the Capital Region at local parks and historic sites located along the Erie Canal. Parks are about clean air, natural beauty and engaging in healthy activities. It made sense to have this event become a smoke free event --- it protected the people who attended and it protected the wonderful sites from the pollution and debris caused by smoking."
Battered Women’s Custody Conference
Mo Therese Hannah, PhD

"The Battered Mothers Custody Conference is dedicated to helping battered mothers and their children navigate the difficult legal landscape they face after a woman separates from an abusive ex-partner.  It has been noted that the stress of battering and litigation leads many women to seek relief in harmful substances, including smoking.  We join with the Capital District Tobacco-Free Coalition in urging mothers to maintain a smoke-free, healthy lifestyle to benefit themselves and their children."
The College of Saint Rose Student Association
Schuyler Bull, President

"As a college community, we find it important to speak out against the dangers of tobacco and to live, work, and learn in a healthy environment."
Capital District Gay & Lesbian Community Council
Nora Yates

"The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community is particularly targeted and we’re proud to work to improve the health of our members and our allies."
