Petition for a Tobacco-Free Campus

Among all smokers, college-age people (ages 18-24) are smoking at a greater rate than any other age group and the national college smoking rate is continuing to climb.

Smoking kills more Americans every year than alcohol, illegal drugs, homicide, suicide, car accidents, fire, and AIDS combined. One-third of all cancer deaths are due to tobacco. Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in our society.

Further, secondhand smoke contains more that 4,000 substances, several of which are known to cause cancer in humans or animals. Exposure to secondhand smoke can cause lung cancer and increase the risk of heart disease.

I care about the air I breathe. I therefore support my campus adopting a tobacco-free policy which includes no sale of tobacco products on campus and no tobacco use of any kind on campus property.
