Support the health and safety of our park patrons
Support tobacco-free parks and playgrounds
Everyday an estimated 3,900 young people under the age of 18 try their first
cigarette and one-third of these children will die prematurely from tobacco related
illnesses.
Smoking near children, youth and adults who are engaging in or watching recreational activities is detrimental to their health. Secondhand smoke is responsible for over 50,000 deaths among nonsmokers each year and is especially harmful for children and adults with asthma and other chronic conditions. Discarded cigarette butts also pose a risk of ingestion to small children and animals.
To help role model non-smoking behavior to children and youth, and to provide
children, youth and their families with a safe, smoke-free environment, I encourage my town/village/city to designate our public parks as tobacco-free zones, particularly the areas where children are present including picnic areas, sports areas,
and parking lots.
